Seriously Sweet Beauty

From sweetly-flavored to sweetly-made, these are the beauty products that will having you looking and smelling like candy

I’m sure many of us remember the oddly artificial, yet oddly addicting flavored Lip Smackers when we were young. If not, that’s okay too! They are one of the key elements for summing up a 90s kid. You could get them anywhere from Target, to Claire’s, and even 7-Eleven for a low cost. There were no limits on the scents with Lip Smackers. There were the typical scents: watermelon, grape, strawberry, and more. Then there were more eccentric scents: Frosted Flakes, Skittles, and even Maple Bacon. Even though they are simple chapsticks, they pack a punch with their many scents.

Made from 100% recyclable candy wrappers, these makeup cases are both helpful for us and helpful to the planet. They are a good idea for beauty lovers who want a unique item, all while using a product that environmentally-friendly. It’s a great gift for those who are environmentally conscience for vegans. These candy-wrapper made items are also sold in wallet-form, laptop cases, and even as a purse. These makeup bags can also double-up as pouches for non-beauty lovers.

There is a large array of perfumes that smell like candy. Prada Candy, Aquolina’s Pink Sugar, Demeter’s Cotton Candy, Vera Wang’s Princess, and more. Depending on whether you’re vegan or concerned about the harsh chemicals in the product, there is a perfume made for you. My personal favorite is Ariana Grande’s Sweet Like Candy. It’s subtle and sweet, and has a fresher scent as opposed to a sickly sweet scent. I get lots of compliments whenever I wear it. You can always go to Ulta or Sephora to try out the other perfumes.

Back in the winter of 2018, beauty Youtuber Kandee Johnson came out with a line sweet-smelling hair products as a collaboration with the haircare brand OGX. Inspired by her name, there were 3 sweet-smelling lines: Candy Gumdrop, Sparkling Cider, and Frosted Sugar Cookie. Within the lines was a shampoo and conditioner. The products worked just as well as the rest of OGX’s products. Although the smell didn’t last long after washing, it’s still nice to smell sweet during your shower or bath.

While using the shampoo and conditioner line, why not try using a sweet-smelling bath bomb too? Da Bomb which is sold at Target has come out with a variety of sweet-smelling, treat-inspired bath bombs. Just to name a couple, they have come out with Cake Bomb, Fairy Bomb, Candy Bomb, and Unicorn Bomb. They not only smell sweet, but turn your bath into a galaxy of pastel hues. For $5, you can come out smelling and feeling like a sweet treat.

If you have been in the makeup game for a while, you have probably heard of, seen, or even smelled Too Faced’s products. Actually inspired by the foods, they are well-known for making products from eyeshadow palettes to setting powders and sprays that smell like the name implies. It’s like kids makeup, but better quality for adults to play around with. Too Faced sells different types of chocolate palettes, a Sweet Peach line and the Tutti Frutti line. The packaging itself is colorful, and the smell is even better. When you open up the product, immediately a rush of sweet smell comes out of the palette. Even though these products are scented, it is safe to use on the face, and the product’s smell dissipates when you put it on. That way you won’t be constantly smelling candy or fruit. This adds something special and unique to the product you’re buying.

Hair For The Not Everyday

Would you believe me if I said hair could be turned into a bear, bike, or bees nest? How about intricate styles being created with a hundred or more bobby pins? Or even a full head encrusted with diamonds and swarovski crystals? Runways and magazines are not only paving the way for unique clothing, but they are paving the way for unique hairstyles too. You have probably seen these time-costly looks, but don’t give it another thought. But what exactly are these new hairstyles that are taking the fashion and beauty world by storm?

This new era of high-fashion hair is being dubbed avant-garde. Avant-garde is a French term that applies to anything that is experimental or innovative. You may have heard it more when talking about paintings, architecture, and fashion. Every decade has their share of innovative hairstyles, but they keep getting more unique and abstract. These styles are just daring works of art using hair and optional everyday objects. lt takes a lot of time and effort to create these styles, but the end-product gives a surreal aesthetic.

Leading the way for this new avant-garde trend which has been grabbing lots of attention are hair sculptures. Although there is no technical term for this trend, hair sculptures are pretty self-explanatory. Stylists mold ordinary hair into different forms with various styling techniques. These sculptures can be anything from objects to even people and animals. It is most commonly seen as random, geometric shapes.

Vogue and Allure have editorials and lookbooks full of these hairstyles. But, these hair sculptures aren’t the only hair trends taking over the runway. Using bold accessories, and a lot of them, are becoming common in the editorial world. Rodarte, Gypsy Sport, and Dolce & Gabbana are just a few brands who love to play up the hair. Rodarte is known to have whimsical hairstyles in their runways using floral arrangements and jewels.

In fact, if you had the chance to watch any runways from the recent NYFW Spring 2019, Rodarte braided dozens of flowers into the models’ hair and had spiked crowns that were placed in the center. Gypsy Sport went au naturale by intertwining grass into the models’ backcombed updos. They always have a preference for lots of fabric and objects found in nature included in the hairstyles. Dolce & Gabbana are known on the runway to play with dazzling crowns and large crystals. If you look up hair tutorials on Youtube, you may see the stylists putting zippers, tulle, and balloons in the hair. Some beauty influencers on Instagram are fans of rings going down the braid, or several large barrettes throughout the hair.

So what does it take to create one of these hairstyles? According to Laetitia Ky, a beauty influencer on Instagram known for her works of hair art, it can take her anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours for a simple hair sculpture. It may require the use of wool, wire, lots of hairspray, styling wax, hair extensions, and a needle depending on the look. It also takes a lot of creativity. The point of these avant-garde hairstyles is that they are revolutionary, so they have to be introduced as a new look. Although these styles can be created with older techniques, they also may require new ones. So only one question remains: Do you have what it takes to try out this hair for the not everyday?

Halal Beauty

The cleaner way of living…

Most of us go into our everyday beauty routine without giving much thought to what is actually in our products. There are oils, vitamins, and minerals, but there are also chemicals, alcohol, and various animal by-products. With an alternative, more natural beauty category, halal beauty, you won’t have to worry about what’s in your lipstick or hairspray anymore.

So what is halal beauty? Halal means lawful or permitted in Arabic, and has been around since the creation of Islam where its guidelines were described in the Qur’ān, or Islam’s sacred text. Products labeled “Halal” are manufactured, produced, and composed of ingredients that are permissible under Islamic law. Pork, blood, and animals that were dead prior to slaughtering, alcohol, and animal fat are a few examples of what is considered “haram,” or “forbidden” in Arabic. This means halal beauty products aren’t always vegan, but are always cruelty-free, otherwise it wouldn’t be considered acceptable according to the religious practice.

Halal doesn’t fall only in a beauty category, as it is also a lifestyle, meaning it refers to clothing and food as well.

So why switch to halal beauty products as an alternative? Although not all halal beauty is vegan, it is more organic and natural. Studies show that one in eight of the average 82,000 ingredients used in personal care products are industrial chemicals. There are little to none of those toxic chemicals such as carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, hormone disruptors, plasticizers, degreasers, and surfactants found in halal products. For those of us that want to try and begin a more natural lifestyle, you should consider halal beauty to start.

Some Halal brands to try out:

FX Cosmetics

SAAF Skincare

One Pure

Amara Cosmetics

Sampure Mineral

Although these halal brands aren’t sold in stores like Sephora and Ulta yet, you can still find them on their websites.
